Tangerine essential oil is cold pressed from the rind of the fruit, capturing the aromatic compounds naturally present in the peel.

There’s something delightfully nostalgic about Tangerine. It brings to mind warm summer breezes, backyard picnics and the carefree joy of peeling fresh citrus under the sun.

Tangerine is sometimes overshadowed by its citrus cousins like Lemon and Orange, but it has its own softer, sweeter personality.

It’s the kind of oil I reach for when I want comfort without feeling heavy.

Diffuse it on gray mornings, while working, during your evening routine, or anytime your home needs a little emotional sunshine.

BACKGROUND

Tangerines have a rich history rooted in Asia, with mandarins cultivated in China for thousands of years.

These golden fruits became associated with happiness, abundance and prosperity. Tangerines and mandarins continue to be exchanged during Chinese New Year celebrations as symbols of good fortune.

Citrus peels also have a long history of use in traditional wellness practices, particularly for digestion.

Modern research is now taking a much closer look at Citrus reticulata and the natural compounds found in its peel.

One of the stars is limonene.

Research examining Citrus reticulata has found that limonene can make up a very large percentage of its volatile compounds. Other naturally occurring constituents can include gamma-terpinene, myrcene and alpha-pinene.

These compounds are being studied for antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, antimicrobial and other biological activities.

TANGERINE + GUT HEALTH

This is one of my favorite areas to look at with Tangerine.

Citrus peel has a long traditional history of use for digestive wellness, and modern research into limonene is giving us interesting clues as to why citrus compounds have been valued for the digestive system.

The digestive tract isn’t simply where we digest food.

Our intestinal environment is involved in:

• Nutrient digestion and absorption
• Intestinal barrier integrity
• Communication with the immune system
• Inflammatory signaling
• Gut microbiome balance
• Gut-brain communication

And this is where limonene becomes especially interesting.

Preclinical research on limonene has investigated its effects on:

INTESTINAL BARRIER SUPPORT

The intestinal lining forms an important barrier between the contents of our digestive tract and the rest of the body.

Research has found that limonene can influence proteins involved in maintaining intestinal barrier integrity, including tight-junction proteins such as ZO-1, occludin and claudin-1.

THE GUT MICROBIOME

Emerging research suggests limonene may also influence the intestinal microbial environment.

A 2025 study examining limonene in experimental models of ulcerative colitis found changes in gut microbial composition along with improvements in markers related to intestinal barrier function, oxidative stress and inflammatory signaling.

This doesn’t mean Tangerine essential oil treats ulcerative colitis. It does, however, give us another fascinating look at the biological activity of one of Tangerine’s primary constituents.

INFLAMMATORY BALANCE

Preclinical studies of limonene have also demonstrated effects on inflammatory signaling, including pathways involving TNF-alpha, IL-6 and IL-1 beta.

Because chronic intestinal inflammation and oxidative stress can affect the integrity and function of the gut environment, researchers are increasingly interested in dietary plant compounds—including essential-oil constituents—as potential modulators of gut health.

A 2025 systematic review specifically looked at plant-derived essential-oil constituents and gastrointestinal health. D-limonene was among the compounds researchers identified as influencing pathways involved in intestinal inflammation.

DIGESTIVE COMFORT

Limonene has also been studied for gastroprotective activity, which may help explain some of the traditional digestive uses associated with citrus peel.

This is another beautiful reminder of something we talk about all the time:

Gut health is connected to whole-body health.

TANGERINE + THE IMMUNE SYSTEM

I like thinking about Tangerine as an immune-system supporting and balancing oil, rather than simply an oil we pull out when we aren’t feeling well.

Our immune system is constantly communicating with our gut, nervous system and inflammatory pathways.

And once again, Tangerine’s chemistry is interesting.

Its primary constituent, limonene, has been studied for:

• Antioxidant activity
• Anti-inflammatory activity
• Immunomodulatory activity
• Antimicrobial activity
• Cellular protection against oxidative stress

Research directly examining Tangerine/Citrus reticulata essential oil has also demonstrated antioxidant and antimicrobial activity in laboratory studies.

Why does this matter?

Because immune health isn’t just about “boosting” the immune system.

We want an immune system that can respond appropriately when needed while maintaining healthy inflammatory balance.

That’s why I prefer the term immune support or immune balance.

The gut connection matters here too.

A significant amount of immune activity occurs around the intestinal tract, so supporting a healthy intestinal environment, healthy barrier function and balanced inflammatory signaling is one piece of supporting overall immune resilience.

TANGERINE + OXIDATIVE STRESS

Our cells naturally produce free radicals during normal metabolism.

That’s not automatically a bad thing.

Our bodies also have antioxidant systems designed to keep those reactive molecules in balance.

Problems can develop when the production of reactive oxygen species exceeds the body’s antioxidant defenses. This is known as oxidative stress.

Many factors can contribute, including:

• Poor diet
• Environmental exposures
• Chronic psychological stress
• Infection
• Inflammation
• Smoking
• Excessive UV exposure
• Certain health conditions

Long-term oxidative stress has been associated with the development and progression of numerous chronic diseases.

This is where Tangerine’s chemistry becomes particularly interesting.

Tangerine essential oil is naturally rich in limonene, a monoterpene that has been extensively researched for antioxidant activity and its influence on cellular oxidative-stress pathways.

Research specifically on Tangerine essential oil has also demonstrated antioxidant activity in laboratory models.

Think of antioxidants as part of the body’s defense system against excessive oxidative damage.

Tangerine gives us another beautiful example of how plants contain compounds that interact with human biology in surprisingly complex ways.

TANGERINE + MENTAL/EMOTIONAL STRESS

Tangerine is emotional sunshine in a bottle.

Its light, sweet citrus aroma can help create an uplifting environment when life feels heavy, stressful or simply exhausting.

I especially love Tangerine when someone feels:

• Mentally drained
• Overwhelmed
• Irritable
• Emotionally heavy
• Stuck
• Unmotivated
• Nervous or tense
• In need of creativity and playfulness

Aroma is incredibly connected to emotion.

Odor information has close neurological connections with brain regions involved in memory, emotion and stress responses. That’s one reason a familiar smell can instantly bring back a memory or change the feeling of a room.

Tangerine’s limonene-rich chemistry is also being investigated in relation to nervous-system function, oxidative stress, neuroinflammation and stress-related pathways.

Emerging research on terpenes such as limonene is even examining their potential interactions with the neuroendocrine-immune system—the communication network connecting our nervous system, hormones, stress response and immune system.

This is important because chronic stress doesn’t stay “in our heads.”

Our stress response communicates with the entire body.

The nervous system, HPA axis, immune system, digestive system and inflammatory pathways are constantly talking to one another.

That makes emotional wellness an important part of whole-body wellness.

Diffuse Tangerine when you’re feeling stuck or uninspired, or incorporate it into your morning or evening emotional routine when you want to create a brighter, calmer atmosphere.

Tangerine can be especially beautiful paired with:

• White Angelica
• Joy
• Inner Child
• Release
• Stress Away
• Lavender
• Frankincense
• Bergamot
• Ylang Ylang

THE GUT-BRAIN-IMMUNE CONNECTION

This might be my favorite way to look at Tangerine.

Instead of putting it into one little box—”digestion,” “immune” or “emotions”—look at how these systems communicate.

Stress affects the gut.

The gut communicates with the immune system.

The immune system communicates with the nervous system.

Oxidative stress and inflammatory signaling influence all three.

Tangerine contains natural plant compounds—especially limonene—that researchers are studying within several of these pathways.

This doesn’t make Tangerine a cure for disease.

It makes it a fascinating oil to include as one part of a holistic lifestyle that supports the body physically AND emotionally.

KEY CONSTITUENTS

LIMONENE

The dominant constituent in many Citrus reticulata essential oils.

Research has investigated limonene for:

• Antioxidant activity
• Inflammatory balance
• Gastroprotective properties
• Immune-modulating activity
• Nervous-system effects
• Cellular protection
• Gut-barrier and microbiome interactions

GAMMA-TERPINENE

A naturally occurring monoterpene found in Tangerine and other citrus oils. It contributes to the oil’s characteristic aroma and has been investigated for antioxidant and antimicrobial activity.

MYRCENE

A terpene found in many aromatic plants. It contributes to Tangerine’s aroma and is being studied for a variety of biological activities, including inflammatory and nervous-system pathways.

ALPHA-PINENE

A fresh aromatic terpene also found in conifers and many herbs. Research has explored alpha-pinene for antimicrobial, inflammatory, respiratory and neurological effects.

The important thing to remember is that an essential oil isn’t simply one constituent.

It’s an incredibly complex combination of naturally occurring plant compounds working together.
